Abstract:

The effects of precolonoscopic large bowel preparation methods on the hematological parameters, colonic mucosal structures and cleansing ability were investigated in this experimental study. Thirty five Wistar Albino rats (200-230gr) were divided into five groups. The first group was control. In the second group mannitol, in the third group sennosid, in the fourth group polyethylene glycol (PEG) and in the fifth group PEG+sennoside were given for the mechanical bowel preparation. Blood samples were taken just before and six hours after the procedure. Na, K, calcium, urea, creatinin, glucosemia, hematocrite, ALT, AST and serum osmolality were measured. Sacrificial colonic lumen content and wall samples were evaluated. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for comparing the results. The best results were obtained with PEG and PEG+sennoside group. In the clinical practice the last group had an advantage of using 50% lower fluid volume than only PEG group.
