Abstract Manuel Vilas’ narrative and poetic works have been categorized by the critics as humorous. The aim of this article is to analyze the kind of laughter among the reception of his literature in order to propose the best theory of humor to understand it. The most accurate approach, in this sense, is Bajtin’s theory of Carnival and popular festivities. His subversive conception of laughter connects Vilas’ tragicomic humor with other cluster of motifs thatcharacterizes his literature (national identity, self-writing, mixture of genres, ideological ambiguity, etc.). Thus, Vilas’ works can be seen as a serious project to show his world view, and can be read in the tradition and framework of the menippean satire.
