Essentialism emerges as a concept that indicates that many elements in human life are determined by immutable essences. It is noteworthy that with the essentialist understanding in education systems, there are many humanitarian problems. The main purpose of this study is to discuss the causes of the essentialist understanding adopted in education and the problems it causes. In this framework, primarily the concept of essentialism in a philosophical context is analyzed. In the second step, the reasons of the essentialism in education and the problems caused by this understanding are tried to be examined. At the same time, the functionality of essentialist attitudes is discussed in the globalizing world. In the final analysis, some determinations are made to change the essentialist conceptions in the understanding of education.
