4 Nisan 1949 yılında 12 üye ülke tarafından kurulan NATO’ya 13.ülke olarak 18 Şubat 1952 yılında katılan Türkiye, ittifaka üye olmadığı halde asker gönderdiği Kore Savaşı ve daha sonrasında da özellikle Amerika ile kimi zaman da diğer müttefikler ile anlaşmazlıklara düşmüş, lakin hiçbir zaman Türkiye’nin ittifaktan ayrılması görüşü benimsenmemiştir. Buna mukabil Rusya’dan alınan ve kısa zaman içerisinde konuşlandırılıp ancak hali hazırda aktif hale getirilmeyen ve tedarik edilmesine karar verilip kamuoyuna açıklandıktan sonra çeşitli spekülasyonlara konu olan S-400 Hava Savunma Sistemi ile Türkiye’nin ittifaktan ayrılmasına dair sesler yükselmeye başlamıştır. Amerikan yönetimi ve senatosunda Türkiye’nin program ortağı olduğu ve % 6-7’lik parçasını üreterek katkıda bulunduğu F-35 Lightning savaş uçağının Türkiye ye teslim edilmemesi ve program ortağı olan Türkiye’nin parça üretiminden de çıkarılması gündeme gelmiş, Türkiye de bunun karşılığı olarak Rusya’nın soğuk savaş sonrası ürettiği ilk uçak olan SU-57’ye ilgi gösterebileceğini belirtmiş, bir bakıma başta Amerika olmak üzere diğer ittifaka üye ülkelere de rest çekmiştir.
