Abstract:

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine how primiparous women who had cesarean section experienced the transition to motherhood. Method: This research was carried out in the phenomenology pattern of qualitative research methods. Research data were collected through in-depth interviews using a semi-structured form. The study included 27 primiparous women who had a cesarean section. The research data were evaluated by content analysis. Results: As a result of the evaluation of the data, three themes and seven sub-themes were determined. The themes determined in the research; “Reasons for cesarean section” “Thoughts about giving birth by cesarean section” “Experiences of being a mother with cesarean section”. In the study, most of the women stated that they wanted to have a vaginal birth and felt sad because they had a cesarean section. However, all of the women described the post-cesarean section as a difficult period. It was determined that the most difficult issues for women in the role of motherhood after cesarean section were breastfeeding and taking care of their babies. Conclusion: The results of the research showed that primiparous women experienced a difficult period after cesarean section and needed support. In this respect, it is important that women and their families should be informed about birth patterns from the pregnancy process and supported in the postpartum period.
