The article considers the modal phrases of preference-comparison in terms of their semantic and pragmatic characteristics, as well as the modal functions implemented in the utterance by means of the English language. The author takes an up-to-date comprehensive approach to the study of comparative modality as a polymodality expressed in the form of modal phrases in the context of the analysis of the problems of axiological modality of a literary text. As a result of the conducted research, the ideas about the modality of the literary text were deepened. The author concludes that the logical basis of preference-comparison is structured by grammatical means that determine the relationship between the subject and the object of preference.
