Background: The changing population structure increases the number of elderly individuals served. The needs and expectations of this population need to be considered in determining the health and social services to be provided to elderly people. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore elderly people’s views, experiences and expectations about the required and desired competences of social and health care professionals working with elderly people. Methods: Descriptive qualitative study design was used. The data were collected from 16 elderly individuals using a semi-structured data form with in-dept interviews. The maximum variation was considered. All interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and analysed in accordance with the principles of ‘qualitative content analysis’. Results: Four themes were identified: good communication, professional behavior, good care and having specific training in the field. Cocnlusion: Consideration of the expectations of the elderly in determining the content of the training of health and social care professionals will increase the quality of education and therefore the quality of life of elderly individuals.
