Mithat Cemal Kuntay (1887-1956)’ın tarafından kaleme alınan “Üç İstanbul” (1938) romanı II. Abdülhamit, II. Meşrutiyet ve Mütareke dönemlerinin sosyal hayatını, kültürünü, siyasetini ele alması bakımından dikkate değer bir eserdir. Roman zaman olarak 93 Harbi’nin yaşandığı 1877 yılından Millî Mücadele’nin gerçekleştiği 1922 yılları arasını kapsamaktadır. Bu zaman diliminde yaşanan savaşlar, siyasal belirsizlikler, yönetimsel sorunlar toplumsal ve siyasal hayatı derinden sarsmıştır. Ülkeyi yönetenlerin zafiyetleri, beceriksizlikleri, sorumsuzlukları, menfaatperestlikleri bireyi, toplumu ve devleti kaçınılmaz bir yozlaşmanın içine sürüklemiştir. Özündeki iyi nitelikleri birtakım dış etkenlerle zamanla yitirmek, soysuzlaşmak, özünden uzaklaşmak gibi anlamlar taşıyan yozlaşma olgusu “Üç İstanbul” romanının ana temalarından birini oluşturmaktadır. Romanda, eserin başkahramanı Adnan'ın yaşam çizgisi izlenerek onun etrafında yer alan kişi(lik)ler, Adnan'ın diyalog içinde bulunduğu çevre ve insanlar toplumsal yaşam alanının bütünüyle ilgili bir kanıya varılmak amacıyla bol ayrıntıya yer verilerek hikâye edilir. Mithat Cemal, yozlaşmayı “Üç İstanbul”da daha belirgin kılmak için şahıs kadrosunun büyük bir kısmını olumsuz karakter üzerine inşa etmiştir. Roman, vatan hainlerinden, kozmopolitlerden, muhbirlerden, jurnalcilerden, rüşvetçilerden, menfaatperestlerden, ahlaksızlardan, riyakârlardan, dalkavuklardan, hayat kadınlarından, asalaklardan, hırsızlardan oluşan geniş bir şahıs kadrosuna sahiptir. Her üç dönem üç farklı konağın çevresinde geçer. Roman kahramanları dönemden döneme göre farklı kimliklere dönüşür. Bu çalışmada bireysel, toplumsal ve siyasal yozlaşmanın “Üç İstanbul” romanında nasıl ele alındığı irdelenecektir.
Mithat Cemal Kuntay (1887-1956) wrote the novel "Three Istanbul" (1938) II. by Abdülhamit II. It is a considerable work in terms of the social life, culture, and politics of the Legacy and Contracting Periods. The novel covers the period between the years of 1922 when the National Struggle took place since the year 1877 when the 93 Wars occurred. The wars, political uncertainty, administrative problems in this period have profoundly struck the social and political life. The weaknesses, incompetences, irresponsiveness, interests of the rulers of the country have driven the individual, society and the state into an inevitable corruption. The corruption phenomenon, which has meanings such as losing good qualities in its essence with a number of external factors over time, disregarding, leaving from its essence, constitutes one of the main themes of the novel "Three Istanbuls". The novel follows the life line of the work's master hero Adnan, the people around him, the environment in which Adnan is in dialogue, and the people are stored with a lot of details in order to get to a blood related to the whole of the social life area. Mithat Cemal has built a large part of the person's staff on negative character to make corruption clearer in "Three Istanbuls". The novel has a wide-ranging personality consisting of patriotic traitors, cosmopolites, messengers, journalists, robbery, interests, immorals, righteous men, worshippers, life women, worshippers, thieves. Every three periods pass around three different houses. Roman heroes turn from time to time into different identities. In this study we will discuss how individual, social and political corruption is addressed in the novel "Three Istanbuls".

The wars, political uncertainties and administrative problems during this period have deeply shaken social and political life. The weakness, incompetence, irresponsibility, and vested interests of those who run the country have driven the individual, society and the state into inevitable corruption. The phenomenon of corruption, which has the meanings of losing the good qualities in its essence with some external factors, becoming degenerate and moving away from its essence, is one of the main themes of the novel “Three Istanbul”. In the novel, The life line of Adnan, the protagonist of the work, is followed, and the personalities around him, the environment in which Adnan is engaged in dialogue, and the people, are told in plenty of detail in order to reach a conclusion about the entire social life space. In order to make corruption more apparent in the novel, Mithat Cemal has created a large part of the personal cast of negative characters. All three periods pass around three different hosts. The novel's protagonists change from period to period to different identities. The novel has a large cast of individuals consisting of traitors, cosmopolitans, informants, jurnalists, bribes, vested interests, depraved, rioters, flattery, prostitutes, parasites, thieves. The aim of this study is to examine how individual, social and political corruption is dealt with in the novel “Three Istanbul”.
