Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar’ın eserinde bir kurum olarak işlenen Saatleri Ayarlama metaforu, modernizmle yeni tanışan bir toplumun yaşadığı zihniyet değişimini ve bu değişimin sancılarını ortaya koymak üzere kullanılır. Weber’in Protestan Ahlakı ve Kapitalizmin Ruhu (1997) adlı eserinde ortaya koyduğu biçimiyle Asketik çalışma ruhu ve disiplininin doğal sonucu olarak ortaya çıkan sermaye birikimi, kapitalist gelişmenin temel unsurlarından birisidir. Weber’de modernitenin ve bununla birlikte formel rasyonalitenin yükselişi, Protestan Ahlakının gerektirdiği çalışma disipliniyle ilişkilidir. Weber’in rasyonalitenin farklı türleri ve özellikle formel rasyonalite ve bürokrasi gibi temel kavramlar üzerinden ortaya koyduğu modernizm eleştirisi, Tanpınar’ın Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü’nde roman boyunca inşa edilmeye çalışılan bürokratik bir kurum üzerinden sunulmaktadır. Bu çerçevede, Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü isimli romanı, iktisat ve sosyoloji alanında oldukça önemli eserler vermiş olan Weber ile buluşturan bu çalışmanın amacı, disiplinler arası bir yaklaşımla, modern toplumda ve/veya bu topluma geçiş sürecinde yaşanması muhtemel sancıların, toplum ve bireyin hayatı üzerinden yeniden düşünülmesini sağlamaktır.
In Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar's book entitled "Clock Setting Institute" (CSI), the metaphor of clock adjustment is used as an institution that reveals the change in the mentality of a society that is newly experienced with modernism and the pain of this change. In Max Weber's Protestant Ethics and the Spirit of Capitalism (1997), capital accumulation emerged as the natural result of the Ascetic working spirit and discipline is one of the essential elements of capitalist development. The rise of modernity in Weber and the accompanying rise of formal rationality are related to the working discipline that is required for Protestant morality. Weber’s criticism of modernism is based on different types of rationality, specifically, formal rationality and bureaucracy. The same bureaucratic institution is also tried to be built in Tanpinar's Clock Setting Institute. In this context, the aim of this study is to bring together Tanpınar's CSI, an important name of the Turkish literature, with Weber, who has produced significant studies in the field of economics and sociology. By using an interdisciplinary approach, it is also aimed at reconsidering the possible pain of individuals in the transition period of a modern society.
