Abstract:

Space studies and memory studies have been a subject of many disciplines from sociology to literature, from psychology to urban sciences with a similar tendency since the 1960s. In this process, the memory and space entering the area of interest of various theoretical perspectives have begun to be treated together as elements that create identity. The work collected by Erman and Özaloğlu is also focused on the related elements and the relationship between these elements. It is also noted that many disciplines have a common interest in memory and space studies, since among the authors there are many academics, except two researchers, one curator and three doctoral students. When it comes to the fields of scholars, a wide variety from philosophy to anthropology, from history to language and communication sciences, from political science and public administration to sociology and social service. However, the majority of the authors of this study are academics from the field-based disciplines such as urban and regional planning, interior architecture and environmental design and architecture (13 academics). This edition, which focuses on the relationship between memory and space, consists of eight sections and 28 articles. The first part includes theoretical discussions on the relationship between memory, space and history with its general lines, as well as the reflection of memory in a literary work. The second part deals with the memory and space relationship through the places of the near past (such as the Ikramiye houses, the Great Ephesus Hotel, the Petkim-Aliağa residential settlement) and the transformations that take place in these places. The work on local change and transformation issues begins from the second and continues to the fourth. The third and fourth chapters tend to the transformation projects and social reflections that are occurring in the urban area and include the Gecondu phenomenon. The fifth part is dedicated to memory spaces. The sixth chapter, with the emphasis on social diversity, covers the experiences of different social groups about the place, while the seventh chapter, entitled Neo-liberal Transformations, is in a sense moving the subtext of the book to the title. The last part deals with the issues of space, identity and belonging.
