Türkiye’de Dizi Sektöründe Dijital Aktivizm Bağlamında Değişen Çalışma Koşulları
2022

Abstract:

Abstract:

Today, women’s movement has moved to a different dimension with digital activism. Women have created a new activism by bringing themes like equal wages for the same job, improving working conditions and harassment in their workplace to digital platforms and social media, and this activism movement has moved to the series and film industry worldwide. The movements against sexual harassment and attacks in the American cinema industry have turned into a digital female activism with the #MeToo and #TimesUp labels, and the social gender equality has been promoted by condemning sexual harassment on social networks. Although the lack of representation of women in the media and in particular in television series continues with an atherical perspective, the #TimesUp movement has argued that the number of women in front and behind the camera should be increased and the influence of social movements should be placed in the media productions. In this context, supporting the #MeToo movement with the #susmabitsin #sendeanlat label, the topic has also moved to the series and film sectors in Turkey. The study of how effective the digital activism of the #MeToo and #TimesUp women’s movements is on the scenarios of television series and set work environments in Turkey is the aim of this study. As a method in the study, the two most widely viewed women-themed television series in Turkey, "Prohibited Apple" and "Everything About Marriage", were discussed, from a feminist point of view, how the #MeToo stream and #TimesUp organization influenced the working conditions in the series sector in Turkey. By observing the set of the previous series, deep conversations were made with the players, producers and directors of these series.  In relation to the conduct of this study, it was approved by the Board of Academic Research and Publishing Ethics of the University of Istanbul Topkapı by Decision of the Ethics Board of 06/2022 and No. 2022/05.

Abstract:

Today, the women's movement has moved to a different dimension with digital activism. Women have created a new activism by bringing issues such as equal pay for the same work, improvement of working conditions and harassment in the workplace to digital platforms and social media, and this activism movement has also moved to the TV series and film industry all over the world. The movements that started against sexual harassment and attacks in the American cinema industry turned into a digital women's activism with the #MeToo and #TimesUp hashtags, and gender equality was promoted by condemning sexual harassment on social networks. Although the patriarchal perspective of women continues to be underrepresented in the media and especially in television series, it has been argued that the #TimesUp movement should increase the number of women in front of and behind the camera and the effects of social movements should be placed in media productions. In this context, by supporting the #MeToo movement with the hashtags #susmabitsin (speak up to end) and #sendeanlat  (tell your story) in Turkey, the issue was also carried to the TV series and film industries in Turkey. The aim of this study is to examine how digital activism, which is formed by both women's movements #MeToo and #TimesUp, is effective on the scenarios of television series and set working environments in Turkey. As a method in the research, the TV series "Yasak Elma" (Forbidden Apple) and "Evlilik Hakkında Her Şey"(All about Marriage), two of the most watched women-themed TV series in Turkey, were discussed, and it has been questioned from a feminist perspective, how the #MeToo movement and the #TimesUp organization has had an influence on the work conditions in the TV series industry in Turkey. In-depth interviews were conducted with the actors, producers and directors of these series by making observations on the sets of the aforementioned TV series. Approval was obtained with the 26/06/2022 dated and 2022/05 numbered ethics committee decision of Istanbul Topkapı University Academic Research and Publication Ethics Committee on the conduct of this study.
