Abstract:

As a sub-class of mental verbs, cognitive verbs express activities of the mind covering all kinds of acquisition of knowledge such as learning, understanding, making sense and making decisions. In this study, cognitive verbs determined based on the entries given in the four-volume work called Azǝrbaycan Dilinin İzahlı Lüğǝti (Explanatory Dictionary of Azerbaijan Language) are primarily classified on the basis of mental processes in the light of cognitive psychology data. In addition to this, a new classification has been developed by analyzing semantic valency structures of cognitive verbs in Azerbaijan Turkish. The descriptive approach of case grammar was taken as a basis in determining the semantic valency structures. Experiencer, content and stimulus are adopted as the basic semantic roles in the semantic structure of cognitive verbs. It has been determined that cognitive verbs in Azerbaijan Turkish have eleven different semantic structures. With this classification describing the semantic features of cognitive verbs, it is aimed to contribute to fields such as lexicology, logology, syntax and teaching Azerbaijan Turkish, as well as verb classification studies.
