Background: The birth process is an extremely important period in which many changes are experienced in ensuring the harmony of women to motherhood. The fact that women are familiar with someone they know and trust in this complex process can lead to a more positive and successful completion of the process. Objectives: The research was conducted to determine the opinions and requirements of the companionship about supporting in labour. Methods: The study was carried out qualitatively between 15 May and 31 December 2018 at Aydın Women's Maternity and Children's Hospital. The sample of the study with purpose sampling method is included 17 people who were stay with the women who childbirth for at least two hours during the first stage and fourth stage of labour. The research data were collected by a structured and semi-structured interview form which was prepared by the researchers based on the relevant literature. Data were analyzed using the content analysis method. Results: The necessity of education about supporting the women who give birth for -especially for the inexperienced- companionship was stated. It is stated that women who give birth need physical and emotional support and those who have birth experience are sufficient to support them. However, it was stated that the inexperienced people felt insufficient and had important views on the physical, emotional and social benefits of birth support to women who gave birth. It was determined that companionship needed to be respected for their decisions and informed and educated about positive communication, clean environment, midwifery care and help/support for the mother at birth from health personnel/ institution. Conclusion: As a result, the opinions of companionship about support for labor were gathered under the themes of, “education, support needs of the woman giving birth, sufficiency in support and the benefits of support for the mother”. Also birth companionship’s requirements for the support for birth were collected under themes of “information, educational needs and expectations from health personnel/ institution”.
