Özet:

Background: The aim of study is to evaluate the “Basic Epidemiology Course” within the doctoral programme of Public Health, Ege University Medical Faculty by gathering the opinions of students graduated from or attending the programme, and the lecturer, directing the programme. Methods: The programme was evaluated by using qualitative and quantitative data gathering procedures in accordance with the educational criticism model devised by Eisner. The research group comprised the students attending the programme since the doctoral programme of the Public Health Department was first started, together with the course lecturer. Data gathered by the questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Of the 26 students who attended the programme 21 answered the questionnaire. 17 of the students and the lecturer, who had been in charge of the programme since its inception were interviewed. The data was gathered in the light of the opinion of the lecturer and the students, under the headings of goals of the programme, content of the programme, learning and teaching process, evaluation of student success, relationship between being a doctorate student or a research assistant and the efficiency of the programme. Qualitative data was evaluated on the basis of concurrent nested strategy. With the help of descriptive analysis of qualitative findings, quantitative findings regarding some sub-problems of the study were explained. Results: It was understood that the goals of the course became more comprehensible to students within time. It is noteworthy that some students who found the perceived goals of the course suitable did not have any expectations at the beginning of the course. Reaching the goals of the course covers, and even exceeds, the period of the doctoral educational programme. Students having difficulty in recalling the content of the course can only list basic topics, and believe that these have been accordingly planned in a meaningful order. There is a desire amongst students to see the length of the course extended and a greater reflection of circumstances particular to Türkiye in the examples used. Students, who believe the course to be easy, stated that materials related to the course were adequate, although adequate use was not made of them. Considerable improvement has been achieved in time as regards class atmosphere and course equipment. Courses, where various methods and techniques are used, are carried out with student participation. It is expected that an opportunity for doing research on the course which requires strict attendance for student understanding. Exams and assignments related to the course are observed to evaluate all cognitive steps. Conclusion: We suggest a revision of the goals and the integration of this course with the other courses, making associate student projects, and making this programme current with students’ feedback.
