Gender and communication in Cuban semirural families

Abstract:

Abstract The family is considered the first group of socialization of individuals. It is in the family that the foundations of gender constructions are laid. This gender socialization involves communicative practices as a vehicle for the system of meanings, norms and values shared at the level of the family group, to later be socially inserted at the institutional and inter-institutional level. Addressing gender constructions associated with communicative practices in family environments should be part of current social research agendas that incorporate a specific focus on communities with rural characteristics in order to generate policies, programs and strategies that address these categories with emphasis on the context. Therein lies the basis of this research whose objective was to characterize the communicative practices through which gender is socialized in the families of students of the Francisco Vales elementary school located in the semi-rural community of Mayajigua, province of Santi Spíritus. A research oriented to this objective required a strict methodological design with a predominantly qualitative perspective that focused its interest on the subject -the family- and its corresponding mediations, imaginaries and subjectivity, for which quantitative and qualitative techniques such as interviews, questionnaires, observations and discussion groups were integrated. The gender perspective constituted a transversal dimension in the application of the instruments. The research revealed family communication practices that legitimized and reproduced sexist and patriarchal gender constructions.
