The manuscript Al-Sab’a al-Sayyār fī Akḥbār Mulūk al-Tatar (The Seven Stars about Deeds of Tatar Rulers) compiled by Seyyid Mehmet Rıza in the 18th century is the most detailed history of Crimea then known to us. Its language is Ottoman Turkish and is very redundant and literary. As it can be extracted from the name, the book tells about histories of seven great Crimean khans. It includes peerless information about historical geography, political history, economical structure and institutions of the Crimean Khanate. Besides, there are detailed accounts on the Golden Horde and its successor states. Having rich as a source on the relations of the Crimean Khanate with the Ottoman Empire, their struggles with the Russians, Tatar-Polish relations and other concerning topics, this precious book has taken attention of Russian orientalists from the 19th century on. Its significance was underlined in Turkish and Western academic circles, too, but it has not been utilized deservedly in historiography. Though there may be true causes of this negligence, this distinguished source of the history Qipčak steppes in late medieval and early new age deserves more interest.
