Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to describe the discursive arrangements in the informative texts in the 5th and 8th grade Turkish textbooks of secondary school that guide the reader in the reading process based on the Prediction Categories (Enumeration, Advance Labelling, Reporting, Recapilution, Hypotheticality, Question) by Tadros (1998). For this purpose, Tadros' classification was first introduced through text samples selected by the researchers, and then the current classification was used to analyze the discursive arrangements in informative texts in Turkish textbooks. The study used the case study design from qualitative research methodologies. The data were collected through document analysis technique and the informative texts in the 5th and 8th grade Turkish textbooks were analyzed. Content analysis method was used to analyze the data. The results indicated that various prediction expressions were found in texts at both levels; the highest frequency was observed in the category of Reporting in the 5th grade Turkish textbook and in the category of Question in the 8th grade Turkish textbook. The findings shows that the representation of discursive arrangements in textbooks, one of the basic tools of mother tongue education, is important for students to develop reading strategies, to support their knowledge of formal schema, to recognize linguistic arrangements specific to the text genre, and to produce texts that interact with the receiver.
