Abstract:

The purpose of the current study is to determine the opportunities of establishing inter-disciplinary connections in the visual arts course curriculum. The study employed the case study design, one of the qualitative research methods. The data were collected by using the document analysis method and analysed with document analysis. The main documents of the study were determined according to the criterion sampling method. In this connection, the curriculums of the required courses accepted to be included in the primary school program by the Directorate of the Board of Education in 2018 constituted the main dataset of the study. The investigation of the relationships between the objectives of the Visual Arts course and those of other courses was made separately by two experts. Miles and Huberman formula was used to calculate the inter-coder reliability. The reliability was found to be higher than 0,80 for all the classes. As a result of the study, the Visual Arts course was found to be associated with all the other courses assumed to be related to it at the beginning. In general, 1st-3rd grade Turkish, Music, Life Sciences, 4th grade Social Studies, Turkish and Music courses were found to be highly related to the Visual Arts course while it was not found to be related to the courses of Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge and Traffic Safety. Moreover, the learning areas found to be most related to the other courses are “Visual Communication and Formation” in the 1st-3rd grades and “Cultural Heritage” in the 4th grade. In light of the findings of the study, it can be suggested that new courses and learning areas through which interdisciplinary relationships can be established between the Visual Arts curriculum and curriculums of other courses can be added to school programs.
