Kültür kavramı, sosyolojik araştırma geleneğinde ve teori oluşumunda çok özel bir konuma sahiptir. Özellikle Almanya’da sosyoloji, başlangıç itibariyle her şeyden önce bir kültür bilimiydi. Araştırmanın odak noktası, modern kültürün özelliklerinin ve karakteristiklerinin sorunsalıydı. Max Weber ve Georg Simmel gibi klasikler, sosyolojinin kültür sorunlarıyla derinlemesine ilgilenmesinin önünü açmış olmalarıyla birlikte kültür kavramının ne kesin bir tanımını yapabilmişler ne de teorisini geliştirebilmişlerdir. Bununla birlikte, kültür kavramı son yüz yıl içinde sosyolojide anlam ve tanımlama açısından büyük değişimler geçirmiştir. Bir Osmanlı tebaasına mensup babanın oğlu olan Alman sosyolog Mohammed Ressam, kültürün tek bir anlamı olmadığından yola çıkarak, kültür sosyolojisi alanında ilk kez sekiz açılımdan oluşan bir teori geliştirmiştir. Bu makalenin amacı, Alman kültür sosyolojisi alanında gölgede bırakılmak üzere olan ve Türkiye’de hemen hemen hiç tanınmayan Mohammed Rassem’in bilimsel çalışmalarını esas alarak, kültür kavramının sosyoloji araştırma geleneği içinde çok farklı anlam boyutları kazandırmış olduğunu ve unsurlarını belirleyerek kültür teorisine yaptığı katkılarını ortaya koymaktır.
The concept of culture occupies a very special position in the tradition of sociological research and theory building. In Germany in particular, sociology was primarily a cultural science. The research focused on problematizing the characteristics and properties of modern culture. Classics such as Max Weber and Georg Simmel paved the way for sociology's in-depth examination of the problems of culture but were unable to provide a precise definition or develop a theory of the concept of culture. Nevertheless, the concept of culture in sociology has undergone a major change in meaning and definition over the last hundred years. The German sociologist Mohammed Ressam, son of an Ottoman subject father, was the first in the field of cultural sociology to develop a theory consisting of eight perspectives based on the fact that culture does not have only one meaning. The aim of this article is to show, on the basis of the academic work of Mohammed Ressam, who is overshadowed in German cultural sociology and virtually unknown in Turkey, that the concept of culture has acquired very different dimensions of meaning in the sociological research tradition and that he has made contributions to cultural theory by identifying its elements.
