Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of passive smoking on carotid artery intimal medial thickness, blood lipid levels, lipoprotein levels and blood pressure. Methods: This descriptive study was carried out on 40 adolescents 20 girls and 20 boys aged 14-15 years who were identified as passive smokers at home and 40 adolescents 20 girls and 20 boys as the control group. Carotid artery intimal medial thickness, serum total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C, VLDL-C, triglyceride levels and blood pressures were measured. Results: Carotid artery intimal medial thickness measurement, serum total cholesterol and LDL-C levels were significantly higher and serum HDL-C levels were significantly lower among passive smokers. Fasting blood glucose levels were normal in all cases. The mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure values of passive smokers group were significantly higher than those of control group. There was no difference in ejection fraction levels. Conclusion: Passive smoking may be an important risk factor for carotid atherosclerosis.
