THE PLACE OF MALEVICH’S BLACK SQUARE PAINTING IN RUSSIAN AVANT-GARDE

Abstract:

Kazimir Malevich (1879-Kiev/1935 Leningrad), one of the important representatives of Russian avant-garde, has been a milestone in the history of art with his painting called “Black Square” which has been exhibited in 0.10 The Last Futurist Exhibition in 1915, and with the suprematism movement he declared. The political, social and economic changes in Russia have great importance for the occurrence of avant-garde movements that led to radical changes in Russian art and made it powerful in the world of art. Suprematism sprang from those art movements and aimed to reach pure abstract art. “Black Square” which Malevich constructed with the designs he made for “Victory over The Sun” opera in 1913, is not only beyond a work of art in an instant creation, functional design or simple geometric form but also an output of intuitive creation that even the understanding of its context took place in the end of a long artistic process. Whereas the space, nothingness and eternity concepts within the content are artistic representations of physical reality standing by the thought provoking scientific and technological development; it is also a new icon standing against the petrified traditionalism e.g. religious belief in art, which is doomed to crumble as a result of the new realities and the exhibition style of the painting. It is the artwork of the most intense feeling reflected by the conscious of bringing the art to the nothingness by stripping it off the objects and removing the form from the objects, and building a new abstract world from the pure point reached with zero form. “Black Square”, representing the perceivable but unintelligible abstract universe, representing zero form and as being one of the pioneers of non-object painting, has been the first insurrection movement of suprematism that will flourish with different colors, and versions within its own philosophy.
