Öğrencinin bilişsel stili ve görsel okuryazarlığı potansiyeli hakkında bilgi verirken, matematik başarısı da bilgi, beceri ve anlayışını ortaya koymaktadır. Geometrik düşüncenin ve uzamsal yönün gelişmesinde simetri önemli bir yer tutmaktadır. Matematik öğretmen adaylarının simetri konusundaki matematik başarı puanları, görsel matematik okuryazarlığı durumu ve bilişsel stilleri arasında anlamlı bir ilişkinin olup olmadığını kadar matematik öğretmen adaylarının simetri konusundaki kavram yanılgıları, zorlukları kadar üstün oldukları yanları keşfetmek te amaçlanmıştır. İstanbul’da bir devlet üniversitesinin 4. sınıfında öğrenim görmekte olan ve Öğrenme Stilleri dersini alan 31 matematik öğretmeni adayı ile uygun örnekleme yoluyla çalışılmıştır. Nicel araştırma yaklaşımlarından korelasyonel model kullanılmıştır. Veri toplama aracı olarak GEFT (Gizlenmiş Şekiller Grup Testi) ve Görsel Matematik Okuryazarlığı Testi ile birlikte araştırmacılar tarafından hazırlanan Simetri başarı testi uygulanmıştır. Literatürde pek incelenmediği ve görsel içerikli olduğu için simetri konusu ele alınmıştır. Değişkenler arası ileri düzeyde bir ilişki bulunamamıştır. Öğretmenlerin simetri konusuna yeterince önem vermedikleri gözlenmiştir. Benzer şekilde görsel matematik okuryazarlığı ile simetri başarısı arasında da ileri düzeyde bir ilişki saptanamamıştır. Simetri konusunun alandan bağımsız bilişsel stile sahip öğrencilerin daha başarılı oldukları düşünüldüğünde alana bağımlı öğrencilerin de başarılı olması için bir şeyler yapılabilir.
While giving information about the student's cognitive style and visual literature potential, math success also reveals his knowledge, skills and understanding. In the development of geometric thinking and spatial direction, symmetry plays an important place. The aim of mathematics teacher candidates in the field of symmetry is to discover the conceptual errors of mathematics teacher candidates in the field of symmetry, as well as whether there is a meaningful relationship between the status of visual mathematics literature and their cognitive styles, as well as the aspects of their superiority as difficulty. The study was conducted by 31 mathematician teachers who are studying in the 4th grade of a state university in Istanbul and taking the Learning Styles course through appropriate sampling. A correlational model is used from Nicel research approaches. As a data collection tool, the GEFT (Secret Forms Group Test) and the Visual Mathematics Reading Test were implemented as a Simmetry success test prepared by the researchers. The subject of symmetry was discussed because it was not much studied in literature and visual content. There is no relationship between the variables. The teachers did not pay enough attention to the symmetry subject. Similarly, there was no advanced relationship between visual mathematical literature and symmetrical success. When the subject of symmetry is considered to be more successful by students with a field-independent cognitive style, something can be done to succeed by the field-dependent students.
Mathematics teacher candidates' mathematical achievement scores on symmetry, visual mathematics literacy status and cognitive styles were investigated for possible relations, the misconceptions of concept and challenges on symmetry, qualities of prospective teachers to reveal the relationship, if exist. Correlational model was used as research design. Sample consisted 31 students who are studying in the 4th class in a state university in Istanbul and chosen by convenience sampling, where the researcher has identified the convenient group for study. Teacher candidates were tested with the GEFT (Confidential Shapes Group Test) and visual math literacy tests. Mathematical success is measured by the mathematics success test prepared by the researchers. Symmetry is not examined in the literature and it has more visual content than other subjects and plays important role in the development of geometric thinking and spatial orientation of the students. Among the reasons why the teachers don’t give importance to this subject, that they don’t have competence on symmetry. Also, there is not a highly significant relation between these three variables. They have some misconceptions as on finding the symmetry axis and on symmetry definitions. Some measures can be taken for field dependent students on symmetry as well.
