A shining star of the 19th century Eastern Mediterranean shipping trade, Mersin Port is no longer meeting the requirements and demand due to increasing trading volume as well as the lack of piers. For this reason, there has been an idea since late 19th century about building a modern port in the city, and there have been some initiatives taken towards this idea. However, due to several reasons, construction of a port in Mersin had not started until 1954. This process was closely observed by the local community, the citys administrators, intelligentsia and the press. Within the scope of this construction, through the news of the local press, the construction process of the port was followed. Apart from the news and comments from the press, the documents from the Prime Ministry and Ottoman and Republic Archives were utilized. According to the research results, the local press was closely following the construction process, and the insufficiency and incompleteness of the port were reported in the news almost every day; therefore the community was always kept interested. For this purpose, the research is designed into two sections. These are; the initiatives taken in the 19th century for the construction of the port and the news from the local press. As per the sections, the construction period of Mersin Port is aimed to be evaluated.
