Abstract:

This study was conducted to determine the relationship between elementary 4th grade students’ reading motivations and their understanding skills and to study teachers’ opinions on this subject. The work group of the research conducted by the mixed method in which the Nicel and Qualitative research approaches are used together, constitutes 216 primary school fourth-class students in three primary schools located in the center of Yozgat province with 10 class teachers working in these schools. The study has used the easy-to-accessful state sample method to identify the participants. The data of the study was collected with the "Reading Motivation Scale" by Star (2010) and the "Reading Success Test" by Batmaz (2017) and the semi-configured interview form prepared by the researchers. The data obtained was analyzed with the SPSS 21.00 program and visual analysis. The study found that elementary fourth-class students have high reading motivations and middle-level understanding skills. It has also been concluded that there is a very high level of meaningful relationship in the positive direction between the students of primary fourth grade reading motivations and their understanding skills.
