Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between narcissism and social acceptance in university students. The study’s research group consisted of 248 students (178 girls and 70 men) at a university in the Middle Black Sea. The study used the five-factor narcissism scale (short form) and the social approval need scale. The Five Factor Narcissism Scale (Short Form) was developed by Glover and others (2012). The short form consisting of 60 items was developed by Sherman and others (2015) It was adapted to Turkey by Eksi (2016). The Social Approval Need Scale was developed by Karaşar and Öğülmüş (2016). The researchers used the SPSS/WINDOWS 20 program. The study used correlation analysis to determine the relationship between narcissism and the need for social acceptance. T tests were also used with variance analysis to determine the differences between groups. In view of the research findings, there is a meaningful relationship between the need for social acceptance and the vulnerable narcissism at a medium and positive level. It has revealed that there is no meaningful relationship between social acceptance and narcissism. Research findings have shown that there is no difference in age, gender, mother and father education levels in the need for narcissism and social approval among university students. In the two dimensions of narcissism, the need for social acceptance differs. This findings of the research also appear important in terms of the need for social acceptance that narcissists can be differentiated. According to these findings of the study, in subsequent research, narcissism and the need for social acceptance can be studied in different samples. Narcissism, social acceptance and various variables can also be thoroughly studied.
