Abstract:

Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate the child patients who referred psychiatric consultation during six months period at a training and research hospital. Method: The psychiatric consultations of the child and adolescent patients at Konya Training and Research Hospital inpatient units between 1 July 2010- 31 December 2010 were assessed retrospectively. The data about which units requested for psychiatric consultation patients' physical and mental diagnoses, psychiatric treatments and follow-up periods were assessed.Results: The psychiatric consultations were requested for 57 (1.5%) child and adolescent patients who were treated in the inpatient units for six months period. 70.1% of consulted patıents were females and 63.1% of them were at the age of 12 or older. At least one psychiatric disorder was found in 86% of patients. The most frequent psychiatric diagnoses was anxiety disorders (33.3%). Psychotropic medications were prescribed for 70.2 %of cases. Fourteen (37.8%) of 57 patients who were referred to the outpatient treatment were admitted to child psychiatry outpatient clinic.Conclusion: In this study, the high rates of psychopathology were found in children and adolescents who were requested for psychiatric consultation, however the consultation requestıng ratio was found low. Physicians dealing with children's diseases and mental health professionals working together is important for the healthy functioning of the consultation process.
