An Analysis of Primary First Grade Students� Readiness in Natural Numbers

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to investigate the readiness levels of first year students for natural numbers in terms of rhythmic counting, one-to-one matching, meaningful counting, conservation of the number and minority-multiplicity comparisons. Descriptive and causal comparative methods were used in accordance with the problems and sub-problems discussed in the study. The participants were89primary first grade students in the Haymana district of Ankara. The readiness level test was used in natural numbers consisting of 12 questions developed by the researchers as data collection tool. According to the findings obtained in the study, the students reached to 75% of the level of learning which was accepted as the limit in all of the five skills required for the readiness, and it was found that the readiness of the students was adequate. A significant difference was observed between the age groups of the students in favor of the 74-80 months old students. There was no significant difference in the educational status of the parents between the readiness levels of children.
