Abstract:

The Kingdom of Yordania has been a host of refugees since its establishment. Jordan’s refugee experience begins with the Palestinians and continues with the Syrian refugees today. The open door policy and friendly approach to Syrian refugees has begun to change and strengthen after the understanding that the crisis will not be as short as expected. Being one of the countries that host the most Syrian refugee population and the country’s refugee intensity makes Jordan different from the other countries where Syrian refugees are. Another feature that makes Jordan different is the presence of international organizations in the country. The UNHCR, which was called to the country in 2011, is in cooperation with the Jordanian government at the point of management of Syrian refugees. The presence of international institutions in the country is extremely important for the protection and strengthening of Syrian refugees. It is possible to see the influence of the BMMYK in the refugee policies followed by Jordan. When Jordan’s Syrian refugee policies began to change in a negative direction, there are examples that the UNHCR and civil society organizations were activated and thus the policies improved. It seems that Jordan is taking advantage of the refugee experience and trying to turn the crisis into an opportunity.
