Kent kimliğini yansıtan unsurlar ait oldukları bölgenin ve bölge halkının yaşam biçimi haline gelerek kültürel, sosyal, siyasal ve ekonomik etkileşimin temel bileşenleri şekline gelmiş olmalıdır. Günümüzde özellikle turizm kentlerinde birbirine benzer bir kentleşmenin hakim olduğu görülmektedir. Kentlerin kendi doğal ve/veya kültürel özellikleri kentsel dokuya yansıyamamaktadır. Bu çalışmada ülkemizin önemli turizm bölgelerinden biri olan Pamukkale-Hierapolis Dünya Miras Alanı’nın Denizli kent kimliğine katkısı değerlendirilmiştir. Bu kapsamda kent merkezinin önemli bölgelerinden olan tarihi, kültürel ve sosyal özelliklere sahip alanları incelenmiştir. Değerlendirilen bölgelerde Pamukkale-Hierapolis Dünya Miras Alanını yansıtan herhangi bir yapısal ve/veya simgesel objenin olmadığı görülmüştür. Sonuç olarak UNESCO bildirgesinde de belirtildiği üzere Dünyadaki tüm eski kentler yalnız o ulusun malı değil, tüm insanlığın ortak malıdır bu nedenle korunması gerekir düşüncesiyle sadece yerinde koruma anlayışından ziyade, kentin sahip olduğu doğal, tarihi ve kültürel zenginliklerin kent kimliğine aktarılarak gelecek nesillere ulaştırılması hususunda kent kimliğinin oluşturulmasına katkı sağlayacak bir takım öneriler geliştirilmiştir.
The elements reveal the identity of city must become main components of cultural and social interaction by becoming the way of life of the region and the people they belong to. Today, a similar urbanization is seen in tourism cities. The natural and cultural characteristics of the cities do not capture on the urban fabric. In this study, the contribution of Pamukkale-Hierapolis World Heritage Site (WHS) to Denizli urban identity was evaluated. In this context, Cinar Square, Bayramyeri Square and Kaleici (Oldtown) were examined. It was observed there were no structural or symbolic objects reflecting WHS in the evaluated regions. As stated in UNESCO declaration, all the old cities in the world are not only the property of that nation, but also the common property of all humanity; therefore, it is necessary to protect them. However, conservation can become widespread by transferring the natural, historical and cultural features of the city to urban generations by transferring them to future generations. As a result, based on the values of the city, a number of suggestions developed to contribute to the formation of urban identity.
