Abstract:

Fatima Bhutto’s New Kings of the World discusses the new cultural sweep rising from the eastern part of the world. Having been culturally suppressed by America since after the Second World War, the third world countries existed at the margins of the cultural placement. Heavily influenced by and yearning to achieve the modernity of the western style of life, the masses of the eastern countries still failed to align themselves with the western ideals exercising power as a strong power center. The study focuses on Joseph Nye’s concept of soft power and how Indian cinema, Turkish soap operas and Korean pop music became the new global icons, challenging the monopoly of America through cultural resistance and soft power. This return to local cultures led to the subversion of American power and offered a powerful rejection of westernization, bringing forth the importance of soft power being used as a weapon in the contemporary world.
