Abstract:

The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the correct and fluent silent word reading level of the 4th grade students, their understanding skills and their reading motivations. The research sample 2016-2017 educational year is composed of 725 students continuing to the fourth class in the state schools located in the district of İzmir Buca. The research model was used. The correct and fluent Silent Reading Test (DASSOT) as a data collection tool has been used, the Understanding Test, the Reading Motivation Scale. The results of the study were evaluated in the SPSS program and studied whether the student's correct and fluent silent word reading level, the student's understanding skills and reading motivations had a meaningful relationship. The study found that there was a statistically meaningful relationship between the students’ understanding skills and reading motivations that they read with the correct and fluent word reading levels. In the students' correct and smooth silent word reading levels, the conclusion was that the students' Turkish lesson score average, gender, library at home, internet and their own rooms, parents-parents educational levels, parents-parents professions mean differences.
