Osmanlı döneminde, 1480’den itibaren günümüze intikal eden yazma eserlerde atalar sözü, “Oğuzname” genel başlığı altında atasözüdeyim karışık, anlamları verilmemiş, ancak divan şiirinde ya anlam karşılığı ya da yansıması beyitlerle desteklenmiş liste sözlükçülüğü evresi yaşanmıştır. 1819’da Turfetü’l-Emsâl’le atasözlerinin şerh edilmesi aşamasına geçilmiştir. 19. yüzyılın ikinci yarısında yazmalardaki gelenek basma eserlerde de geliştirilerek sürdürülmüş manzum örneklere nesir parçaları da eklenmiş halk ağzından derlemelerle (A. Vefik Paşa’nın eseri gibi) söz sayısı artırılmıştır. Liste sözlükçülüğü ve manzum örnekler kullanma, anlam vermeme basma eserlerin de temel özellikleridir. Cumhuriyet döneminin 1923-1950 yılları arasında M. Esat İleri, M. Halit Bayrı, Ömer Asım Aksoy, M. Nihat Özön ve M. Ali Ağakay’ın sözlük çalışmalarında atasözü deyim ayrımında önemli adımlar attıkları, anlam vermeyi gündeme getirdikleri görülmüştür. M. Esat İleri’nin 1924 tarihli Kinâyât’ında başlayan, mahallî atasözü deyim sözlüklerinde gelişen anlam verme girişimi, 1943’te Mustafa Nihat Özön’ün Türkçe Tâbirler Sözlüğü ve 1949’da Mehmet Ali Ağakay’ın Türkçede Mecazlar Sözlüğü ile ileri bir safhaya taşınmıştır. Özön ve Ağakay’ın sözlüklerinin basıldığı yıllarda TDK Kitaplığına Hüseyin Şevket Aydüz’ün hazırladığı Halk Tâbirleri ve Hulusi Sadullah Tirişoğlu’nun hazırladığı Türkçe Deyimler Sözlüğü eserleri girmiştir. Bu eserlerde de deyimlere anlam verilmiş, cümle içinde kullanılışları gösterilmiştir. TTK Kitaplığında da benzeri yayımlanmamış çalışmalar vardır. TDK’nin 1953-1959 yılları arasındaki atasözü ve deyim derlemeleri geniş kapsamlı, genel, anlamları verilmiş, atasözü deyim ayrımı daha sağlam yapılmış sözlüklerin hazırlanmasına önemli katkıda bulunmuştur. Yine Müstecip Ülküsal ve A. Battal Taymas’ın Ankara’da basılan yurt dışı Türkleriyle ilgili sözlükleri de yararlı olmuştur. TDK’nin kurumsal çalışma olarak genel atasözü deyim sözlükçülüğünde Ömer Asım Aksoy vasıtasıyla 1971 ve 1976 yıllarında son aşamaya ulaştığı dönemde H. Fethi Gözler, Ali Doğanay ve Aydın Su (Yusuf Ziya Bahadınlı) da süreci hızlandıran sözlüklere imzalarını atmışlardır.

Esat İleri and developed in the local proverb idiom dictionaries are moved to an advanced stage with the Türkçe Tâbirler Sözlüğü (Turkish Phrases Dictionary) of Mustafa Nihat Özön in 1943 and in 1949 Mehmet Ali Ağakay’s Türkçede Mecazlar Sözlüğü (Dictionary of Metaphors in Turkish). In the years when the dictionaries of Özön and Ağakay were published, the work Halk Tâbirleri (The Public Locutions) prepared by Hüseyin Şevket Aydüz and the Türkçe Deyimler Sözlüğü (Turkish Idioms Dictionary) prepared by Hulusi Sadullah Tirişoğlu entered the Turkish Language Association (TLA) Library. In these studies, meanings of idioms are given and their use in sentences is shown. There are similar unpublished studies in the Turkish Historical Society (THS) Library. Proverbs and idiom compilations of TLA between 1953-1959; extensive, general, given meanings, proverbial idioms have been made more robust, which has contributed significantly to the preparation of dictionaries. In addition, the dictionaries of Müstecip Ülküsal and A. Battal Taymas which printed in Ankara and related to Turks living abroad were also useful. During the period when TLA reached the final stage in 1971 and 1976 thanks to Ömer Asım Aksoy for his dictionary of general proverbial idioms; H. Fethi Gözler, Ali Doğanay and Aydın Su (Yusuf Ziya Bahadınlı) also published dictionaries that accelerated the process.
