Abstract:

Abstract The main aim of this paper is to offer a comprehensive methodological framework for transnational feminist translation studies from a situated, and thus necessarily limited position. In order to do this, we will frame our research within the era of transnational feminisms, and establish a fruitful dialogue between transnational feminisms and feminist translation studies. The most influential proposals in the field of feminist translation studies in our context will be reviewed with a two-fold purpose: first, to clarify the basic principles of this field as it developed over time, and second, to assess the extent to which these formulations may incorporate current debates in transnational feminisms. The concept of intersectionality, key to explain how different interlocking systems of oppression interact in a world defined by globalization and neoliberal values, will be laid out highlighting the fundamental (ethical) role translation has in enabling (or disabling) cross-border alliances that can challenge prevailing hegemonies. Our proposal of transnational feminist translation studies acknowledges the contributions made by feminist theories and practices in scholar settings, focusing mainly in the Latin American, Iberian, and North American settings. After analysing the challenges and opportunities of conceptualizing translation studies from a transnational feminist perspective, we will scrutinize some of the areas of common interest already explored in previous scholarship. Our definition of feminist transnational translation studies is complemented by a critical reflection on different interventions articulated from this epistemological framework, seeking to influence, impact and transform the practice of and research on translation.
