Abstract Strategic learning means to learn with full awareness of the influence of the environment and the skills within learning. This kind of learning, which is made into the guiding paradigm on some reforms of basic and college education, is often not a concern to those in charge of managing distance education. Through a case study, that involves consultation with the students, professors, coordinators and specialists of a distance master degree program, certain needs and gaps were shown, which lead us to raise the issue about the pertinence of teaching to learn strategically on a postgraduate program. The exploration of the case study reveals points of view from students and professors about the necessity of strengthen some strategic skills, demonstrates major capacity gaps and promotes the discussion about the accountability of students and professors in the achievement of the skills to learn, in a context of distance education.
