Abstract:

In the history of Arabic rhetoric, there are some linguists who, under the influence of Aristotelian and Hellenistic thought, center philosophical rhetoric, logical concepts and methods and establish the science of rhetoric accordingly. One of them is Ebū al-Kāsım al-Sijilmāsī (d.?), from the Maghreb rhetoric school. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the understanding of rhetoric by examining Sijilmāsī's work called al-Manzaʿ al-badīʿ fî tejnīs esālīb al-badīʿ. With the study carried out by examining the entire work, Sijilmāsī revealed his understanding of literary criticism and rhetoric in this work under the influence of Aristotelian logic and philosophy, and in this framework, Aristotle determined the categories he determined as the predicates of existence, and defined each title as high genus, and determined ten subheadings. It has been seen that each of the genera includes species, chapters and parts. It has been determined that the author's work differs from the classical classification method in the form of bayān, maʿānī, and badīʿ in rhetoric with its category logic. Although Sijilmāsī was under the influence of Aristotelian logic and philosophy in his work, it was concluded that he had a unique systematic and original understanding of rhetoric, differing from Aristotle in naming categories and referring to them with literary meanings.
