Background: The aim of the study is to investigate Dokuz Eylul University School of Medicine’s incoming students’ sociodemographic characteristics, factors influencing selection of school of medicine, perceptions regarding the School’s educational system and learning environment, and to compare the data of 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 academic years. Methods: Being a cross-sectional and analytical study, at the beginning of both academic years, a questionnaire was implemented to year one students. In the first year 92.5%, and in the second year 90.4% of the students were reached. Chi-square test was used for analysis. Results: For both years, nearly 60% of the students were male and most of them were Super/Anadolu/Fen Lisesi graduates. Nearly 90% of the students were willing to enter medical school, “helping people” was cited among the leading factors most affecting their selection of medical profession. In the first 83.6% and in the second year 67.3% of the students expressed that awareness about the implementation of active learning system in Dokuz Eylul University School of Medicine Students being positively/partially positively influenced their selection. In our study, for both years, a large majority of students expressed positive opinions regarding the learning environment; 80% were found to have accustomed to our School at the end of the first month and nearly all were found to be pleased/partially pleased of being a student in our School. For both years, most commonly cited post-graduate career plans of our students were respectively “being a specialist” and “obtaining a master/PhD degree”. Conclusion: Implemented within the context of program evaluation studies since two years, and determining and comparing Year 1 students’ profiles, the present study is planned to be continued in the following years and be reviewed as needed.
