Abstract Population aging affects all societies, including developed ones. In Cuba, the high levels of life expectancy, together with low fertility and mortality rates, have placed the country in the final phase of the demographic transition. This phenomenon also directly affects the economically active population, so it can be stated that population replacement is seriously compromised. Fewer and fewer people enter working life, so we need to have all the labor resources available for the production of goods and the provision of services. In the social security legislation, a procedure is established for the work of retirees, so this work was aimed at determining its effectiveness in terms of linking retirees to work in the Playa municipality, delving into the socioeconomic characteristics of the municipality , the retirees who were linked to work and their motivations to do so, as well as the limitations that arise in relation to this problem. The study analyzes the theoretical foundations of aging and the work of retirees, as well as the national legal framework that regulates the procedure. The results obtained are valued, which allow confirming the research hypothesis and reaching conclusions that focus on the essential aspects addressed and establishing recommendations that point towards the improvement and multiplication of the results.
