Osmanlı’nın son döneminde 1838 Balta Limanı Ticaret Anlaşmasının sonrasında önemli üretim ve dış ticaret sorunları baş göstermiştir. Cumhuriyet’in kuruluş yıllarında uzun süren savaşlardan dolayı doğal kaynakların ve insan gücünün kaybedilmiş olması ekonomik açıdan önemli bir dezavantaj oluşturmuştur. Cumhuriyetin ilanından günümüze kadar 100 yıllık periyotta ekonomik aktiviteler ve dış ticaret performansı dalgalı bir seyir izlemiştir. Cumhuriyet döneminin ekonomik temelleri 1923’te İzmir İktisat Kongresi’nde atılmıştır. İkinci Dünya Savaşı döneminde dış ticaret fazlası veren Türkiye Cumhuriyeti, 1946’dan itibaren liberal ekonomi modeline geçmiş ve bu dönemden sonra dış ticaret açığı vermeye başlamıştır. İthal ikameci politikalar ihracatı olumlu etkilese de ithalatı çok daha fazla artırarak dış ticaret açığı problemini yapısal bir hale getirmiştir. 1980’de ithal ikameci politika yerine ihracata dayalı sanayileşme politikası benimsenmiştir. 1996 Gümrük Birliğine katılarak ihracat pazarlarının genişletilmesi amaçlanmış olsa da ithalattaki hızlı artış dış ticaret açığını derinleştirmiştir. 1994 ve 2000’li yıllarda bölgesel, 2008’de küresel kriz ile yüzleşen Türkiye ekonomisi bu krizlerden ve 2019’da yaşanan Covid-19 salgınından olumsuz etkilenmiştir.
During the final periods of the Ottoman Empire, after the 1838 Balta Liman Trade Agreement, significant issues relating to production and foreign trade came to the forefront. The important economic disadvantage arose from the depletion of natural resources and human force resulting from extended conflicts during the early establishment era of the Türkiye Republic. Economic activities and foreign trade performance have shown fluctuating trends in the 100-year period from the establishment of the Türkiye Republic to today. The roots of economic policy foundations of the Republican period were made in 1923 at the Izmir Economy Congress. The Republic of Türkiye had foreign trade surpluses during the Second World War after that, the liberal economy model started to implement in 1946 resulting in the foreign trade deficit. Although import substitution policies had positive effects on exports, they increased imports much more and created structural foreign trade deficit problems. In 1980, instead of import substitution, an export-based industrialization policy was adopted. Despite the intention to broaden export avenues through participation in the 1996 Customs Union, the swift rise in imports exacerbated the trade deficit. The Türkiye economy was adversely affected by regional crises in 1994 and 2000, a global crisis in 2008 and, the Covid-19 outbreak in 2019.
