Abstract:

Great Seljuk State, with the support of the Oghuz tribes from the foundation phase, became a great empire in a very short time, the borders of which extend from China to the Mediterranean. Oghuz tribes were quickly settled in Iran, Iraq, Syria and Anatolia in order to ensure permanence in the newly conquered lands. Yivas based on the Uçok branch of the Oghuzs, made Hamadan and its surroundings their homeland. During the powerful times of the Seljuk State, Yivas were an obedience community to the Seljuks. They found the opportunity to move freely after the collapse of the Seljuk State. Berçem, one of the Yiva Turkmens, established a Turkish principality in Iran. This political organization is referred to as “Âl-i Berçem” in the sources because of its leaders named Berçem. The Berçems, taking advantage of the conflicts between the Abbasid Caliphate and the Iraqi Seljuks, gained political and military strength in a short time. The Abbasids, one of the most influential political organizations in the region, approved the Berçems' political and military existence. The Berçems also had various relations with the Lurs, Atabegs and Harzemshahs who were among the other political forces in the region. When the Mongol invasion reached the lands of Berçem, the Berçems fought against the Mongols under the leadership of Suleiman Shah. With the murder of Suleiman Shah by the Mongols, the Berçem Principality was destroyed.
