Sosyal hareketler, var olan yerel veya küresel bir sorundan kaynaklı doğmaktadır. Tarihin hemen-hemen her döneminde insanlar bazı sorunlara tepkilerini ortaya koymak ve sorunu ortadan kaldırmak için sosyal hareketler başlatmışlardır. Bazen hareketlere katılan insanlar amacına ulaşmış bazen de çok ağır şekillerde cezalandırılmışlardır. Eski/yeni toplumsal hareket tartışması genelde sosyal bilimlerde, özelde sosyolojide 1960’lı yıllarda yapılmaya başlamıştır. Dönemin düşünürlerinden bazıları, eski toplumsal hareket olarak nitelendirilen işçi sınıfı ile yeni toplumsal hareket olarak görülen ekoloji, LGBT-İ, barış ve kadın hareketi gibi hareketleri birbirinden ayırırken, bazı düşünürler bu ayrımın yapılamayacağını, eski/yeni hareketlerinin birbiriyle ilişkili olduğunu söylerler. Bu çalışmanın amacı eski/yeni tartışmaları bağlamında İzmir’de hayvan hakları savunucularını değerlendirmektir. Hayvan hakları hareketinin talepleri, örgütlenme biçimi, mücadele yöntemleri ve diğer hareketlerle olan ilişkileri üzerinden yeni bir toplumsal hareket örneği olup olmadığı tartışılmıştır. Çalışma İzmir’de hayvan hakları mücadelesi veren Ege Hayvan Hakları Federasyonu, Sehayder Derneği, Islak Burunlar Hayvan Hakları Derneği, Hipder Derneği, Afalina Hayvan Hakları Topluluğu ve Ege Üniversitesi Hayvan Hakları Topluluğu ile yapılmıştır. Bu gruplar dışında İzmir’de hayvan hakları mücadelesi veren diğer hareketler çalışmanın kapsama alanına dâhil değildir. Çalışmada yoruma dayalı cevaplar elde etmek için nitel araştırma yöntemi kullanılması uygun görülmüştür. Teknik olarak ise derinlemesine görüşme tekniğine başvuru yapılmıştır.
Social Movements arise from an existing local or global problem. In almost every period of history, people have started social movements to show their reactions to some problems and to eliminate the problem. Sometimes the people who participated in the movements achieved their goal, and sometimes they were punished in very severe ways. The old/new social movement discussion started to be made in social sciences in general and sociology in particular in the 1960s. While some of the thinkers of the period clearly distinguish between the working class, which is described as the old social movement, and the movements such as the ecology, LGBT-I, peace and women’s movement, which are considered as the new social movement, some thinkers emphasize that this distinction cannot be made and that the old/new movements are interrelated. The aim of this study is to evaluate animal rights defenders in Izmir in the context of old/new debates. It has been discussed whether the animal rights movement is an example of a new social movement based on its demands, organizational form, method of struggle and its relationship with other movements. The study was carried out with the Aegean Animal Rights Federation, Sehayder Association, Wet Noses Animal Rights Association, Hipder Association, Afalina Animal Rights Society and Ege University Animal Rights Society, which fight for animal rights in İzmir. Other than these groups, other organizations that fight for animal rights in İzmir are not included in the scope of the study. In the study, it was deemed appropriate to use a qualitative research method to obtain answers based on interpretation. Technically, indepth interview technique was used.
