The aim of our study is to investigate the rate of smartphone addiction in healthy young adult individuals, to compare smartphone addiction according to gender, and to examine the relationship between smartphone addiction and physical activity level and depression. Material and Methods: The sample of the research consists of 255 students between the ages of 18-25, selected from the Istanbul Aydın University Vocational School of Health Services students by simple random sampling method on a voluntary basis. In the study, socio-demographic characteristics form, Smartphone Addiction Scale Short Form (SAS-SV), International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were used, and the students were asked to fill in. Results: When the calculation was made according to the SAS-SV score, smartphone addiction was found in 120 (47.1%) of the participants. There was no statistically significant difference between the mean scores of students' total smartphone addiction scores and gender. There was no relationship between individuals' smartphone addiction levels and physical activity and depression levels. Conclusion: Smartphone addiction is not associated with physical activity and depression in healthy young adults aged 18-25, but it has been observed that the risk of smartphone addiction in young individuals is high in both genders. More studies are needed on the effects of smartphone addiction, which is increasingly used today. Keywords: Smartphone Depression Physical Inactivity Young Adult

Abstract:

Intelligent phones are often used today as an essential element of communication with the ability to quickly access information through the internet, and their duration of use is also extended. The aim of our study is to study the rate of smartphone addiction in healthy young adults and to study the relationship between smartphone addiction and physical activity levels and depression. Tools and Methods: The sample of the study consists of 255 students between the ages of 18 and 25 who are selected according to the simple random sampling method depending on the essence of volunteering from the University of Istanbul Aydin Health Services Professional High School students. In the study, the form of sociodemographic characteristics, the Smart Phone Addiction Scale Short Form (ATBÖ-KF), the International Physical Activity Survey Short Form (UFAA-KF)) and the Beck Depression Scale (BDÖ) were asked to be used and filled by students. Results: When calculated according to the ATBÖ-KF score, 120 (47.1%) of participants were diagnosed with smartphone addiction. There is no statistically significant difference between the average of the total scores of students’ smartphone addiction and gender. There was no connection between the levels of smartphone addiction and physical activity and depression. The conclusion is that smartphone addiction is not associated with physical activity and depression in healthy young adults aged 18-25 years, but it has been shown that young individuals have a high risk of developing smartphone addiction in both sexes. Today, it is necessary to work more on the effects that increasing use of smartphone addiction can create.
