Sexual health problems of women in the postpartum period, role of midwife and nurse

Abstract:

The postpartum period which consists of many changes including physiological, hormonal and social affects the sexual life as well as the other aspects of the women’s lives. These effects are mostly negative and may lead to the emergence of need for medical assistance. However, the majority of women continue the sexual life without asking any help or trying to solve by themselves the complaints experienced especially in the first year after giving birth. The most important problems are dyspareunia, vaginal dryness, pelvic floor dysfunction, loss of sexual desire /libido. In this review, the problems and causes which affect the women’s sexual health during the postpartum period were revised in line with the literature. In addition, it was emphasized that midwives and nurses should be informed about sexual health problems in the postpartum period and how they should take part in this process.
