Bir enstrümanın solo kimliğini kazanma sürecinde orijinal olarak kendisi için bestelenmiş eserler oldukça önemlidir. Keman ailesinin bir üyesi olan viyola, başlangıçta oda müziği ve orkestra eserlerinin iç partilerinde tamamlayıcı nitelikte kullanılmıştır. Yapısal gelişimini tamamladığı klasik dönemde Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ve Joseph Haydn gibi besteciler eserlerinde viyolaya daha fazla sorumluluk vermiş, enstrümanın ön plana çıkmasını sağlamışlardır. Bu sayede teknik ve müzikal imkânları ortaya çıkan viyola için 19. yüzyıldan itibaren daha fazla solo eser bestelenmeye başlanmıştır. Kendisi önemli bir keman virtüözü olan Henri Vieuxtemps (1820-1881) viyola repertuvarına önemli eserler kazandırmıştır. Bu çalışmada Henri Vieuxtemps’ in hayatı, viyola için bestelediği eserler ve bu eserlerin analizleri yer almaktadır.
In the process of gaining the solo identity of an instrument, the works originally composed for himself are quite important.
