We come across fig,which dates back to Adam and Eve as depicted in the holy docments sometimes in a Greek myth or Indian saga. In such a context, fig is a fruit that is as old as the human history. Fig which represents various symbolisms has had a favourable area to grow in Anatolia with its tree and fruit. As fig is placed together with olive and pomegranate in the holy books such as The Holy Quran and the Pentateuch, fig has an important place in these religions and although fig is perceived as destroyer of the households and the so-called banned fruit that has sexual connatations in folk culture, it also remains as the symbol of abundance and cure. Fig has been preferred as the natural cure for such diseases as liver problems, enlarged spleen, anaemia, hemorrhoids, and asthma. Fig is a symbol of abundance with its fruit, it is not planted around the dwelling places as it destroys what is around with its powerful roots. It is common to detect this feature of fig in idioms, proverbs and folk songs. Fig is grown mostly around İzmir and Aydın in Turkey, that is why, it has a wide place in the region's folklore as a commonly used motif. In order to study these features of fig and analyse their effects on the folklore, in this study we are trying to analyse how fig is used in folk medicine and depending on that, what kind of meanings it has around the region and how it is placed in the the folklore with
