Purpose: This study was done to determine the levels of exhaustion in nurses working in a university hospital and to study the relationship of exhaustion with socio-demographic variables. Method: The study was conducted with 192 nurses who agreed to participate in the study. The data was collected with a sociodemographic data form consisting of 31 questions and a Maslach Extinctivity Scale (MTÖ) consisting of 22 questions. Results: Nurses' emotional exhaustion sub-dimensional score average was 20.3±7.0, insensitivity sub-dimensional score average was 6.0±3.2 and personal success sub-dimensional score average was 19.3±4.1. In nurses, gender, detected income level, the presence of chronic illness, the history of receipt of psychiatric assistance, the total duration of service in the clinic, the problem of living condition, professional suitability, professional commitment, love of the profession and the institution’s possibility of professional development were found to affect the exhaust (p<0.05) Result: Nurses were determined to have a high level of emotional exhaust, a low level of insensitivity and a low level of personal success to be reverse proportionate. Extinction syndrome can be experienced as a result of the interaction of nurses’ personal characteristics with their workplace and professional characteristics. All of these variables affect the extinction levels. In nurses, the exhaustion should be assessed both individually and organizationally.
