Abstract:

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between the marital adjustment and perceived social support in pregnancy. Material and Method: This is a descriptive and correlational study. It was conducted at a maternity hospital in a province located in the Eastern Turkey. The population of the study consisted of all pregnant women applying to the related hospital. The sample group of the study consisted of 315 pregnant women, who applied to the related hospital between February-August 2014 and accepted to participate in the study. “Information Form”, “Multi-Dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support”, and “Dyadic Adjustment Scale” were used to collect the data. The data were evaluated by using the percentage, mean, standard deviation, and the Pearson correlation test. Results: It was found that pregnant women had a total mean score of 61.68±20.05 in the Multi-Dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and a total mean score of 34.93±13.30 in the Dyadic Adjustment Scale. A statistically negative significant relationship was determined between mean scores of the Multi-Dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and mean scores of the subscales of Dyadic Adjustment, Dyadic Satisfaction and Showing Love. On the other hand, a positive significant relationship was determined between the Multi-Dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and the subscale of Dyadic Commitment. Conclusion: It was determined that pregnant women had high mean score of social support but low mean score of dyadic adjustment scale. It was found that as the perceived social support increased in pregnant women, the marital adjustment decreased.
