Rheumatologic physiotherapy and rehabilitation is important in order to improve the quality of life and reduce symptoms and disability in patients. Given its complexity and effectiveness, it is essential to raise awareness in this area in our country. Therefore, the aim of this study was to retrospectively investigate the profiles of patients referred to the Rheumatologic Rehabilitation Unit of the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, Faculty of Health Sciences, which serves in the inpatient service and outpatient clinic of the Rheumatology Department of Gazi University Training and Research Hospital. A total of 403 patients receiving outpatient (n=312, 77%) and inpatient (n=91, 23%) physiotherapy were included in the study. Demographic information, diagnosis, duration of disease and comorbidity of patients were recorded. The majority of patients receiving outpatient physiotherapy were diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis with 51%, and the majority of patients receiving inpatient treatment with systemic sclerosis with 35%. 78.7% (n=317) of the patients were referred to our unit for physiotherapy program due to musculoskeletal problems and 21.3% (n=86) due to cardiopulmonary system problems. 62.6% (n=57) of the patients who were consulted as hospitalized patients were referred to physiotherapy due to cardiopulmonary system problems. As a result of the study, it is found that the number of patients with prominent musculoskeletal problems is high, but physiotherapists can arrange treatments for findings related to other systems as well as musculoskeletal problems. We think that by increasing the awareness levels of rheumatologists who consult patients for physiotherapists, more patients can reach physiotherapy services.

Özet:

Romatological physiotherapy and rehabilitation are important to improve the quality of life of patients, to reduce symptoms and disabilities. Given its complexity and effectiveness, it is essential to increase awareness in this area in our country. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to retrospectively examine the profiles of patients directed by romatologists to the Romatological Rehabilitation Unit, which serves in the bed service and clinic of the Romatology Science Department of the University of Gazi Education and Research Hospital between December 2016-June 2019. Patients’ demographic information, diagnoses, periods of disease and comorbidities were recorded. The study included a total of 403 patients with foot (n=312, 77) and bed (n=91, 23%) physiotherapy. The majority of patients receiving foot physiotherapy were diagnosed with ankylosan spondylitis by 51% and the majority of patients receiving bed-treatment were diagnosed with systemic sclerosis by 35.2%. 78.7% of patients (n=317) were directed to our unit for a physiotherapy program due to musculoskeletal problems, while 21.3% (n=86) were directed to our unit for cardiopulmonary problems. 62.6 percent of patients consulted as hospitalized patients (n=57) were directed to physiotherapy due to cardiopulmonary system problems. As a result of the study, we see that the number of patients with muscle-skeletal problems is excessive, but physiotherapists can organize treatments for findings related to other systems, in addition to muscle-skeletal problems. We think that by increasing the level of awareness of the Romatologists who consult patients with physiotherapists, more patients can reach the physiotherapy service. Rheumatological physiotherapy and rehabilitation is important in order to improve the quality of life and reduce symptoms and disability in patients.
