Akdeniz’in Kıbrıs’tan sonra ikinci büyük adası olan Girit, Asya, Avrupa ve Afrika kıtalarının ortasında stratejik bakımdan önemli bir konumda bulunmaktadır. Girit Adası, yaklaşık yirmi beş yıllık zorlu bir mücadeleden sonra 1669 Sadrazam Köprülü Fazıl Ahmed Paşa tarafından Venediklilerin elinden alınmıştır. Girit fethini aydınlatan eserlerden birkaçından metnin inşasında yararlanılmıştır. Üç adet farklı nüshadan faydalanılmıştır: Tarih-i Mûteber Feth-i Kandiye (Tarih-i Fazıl Ahmed Paşa): İstanbul Üniversitesi Kütüphanesi kayıt no: T. 6062/ Ankara Milli Kütüphane mikrofilm arşiv nu: A-2351, Târih-i Fâzıl Ahmed Paşa ve Feth-i Kandiye: Topkapı Sarayı Müzesi Türkçe Yazmaları arşiv no: 3605, Hikâyet-i Azimet-i Sefer-i Kandiye: İzmir Milli Kütüphanesi 24/510. Bu yazmalar arasında metnin inşasında en eski nüsha olduğu tespit edilen Tarih-i Mûteber Feth-i Kandiye (Tarih-i Fazıl Ahmed Paşa) adlı eserden yararlanılmıştır. Kullanılmış olan üç nüshada 1645’de Hanya’nın fethi ile Deli Hüseyin Paşa’nın faaliyetleri, Fazıl Ahmed Paşa’nın Kandiye muhasarası, tayinler ve aziller, fethedilen yerler hakkında bilgiler, donanmanın durumu, deniz savaşları, yardımda bulunan devletler, devlet görevlilerine gönderilen hilatlar ve hediyeler, lağım savaşları, arz ve mektuplar, sarf olunan mevali ve zehir, şehit ve yaralıların sayısı, sarf olunan mühimmat ve cephane, Kandiye’nin kuşatılması, Venedik Cumhuriyeti ile yapılan barış görüşmeleri, barış görüşmeleri sonunda imzalanmış olan anlaşma metni ve daha başka konular hakkında bilgiler içermektedir. Bu metinde önemli bilgiler içeren bu nüshalar gün yüzüne çıkartılarak metinlerin tanıtılması ve Girit’in fethinin aydınlatılması amaçlanmıştır.
