Wilson ve Lenin tarafından uluslararası toplumun gündemine sokulan, Kendi Kaderini Tayin Hakkı, uluslararası hukuk ve siyasetin en önemli konularından birini teşkil etmektedir. Sömürgeciliğin tasfiyesinden sonra, çeşitli etnik-politik grupların, kurulu siyasi otoriteye direnmelerinin bahanesi ve son olarak Sovyetler Birliği'nden ayrılan devletlerin hukuki gerekçesi olmuştur. Çalışma, kendi kaderini tayin hakkı ile ilgili liberal teorilerin yanında Marksizm'in kurucu ve uygulayıcılarından hareketle sistematik bir Marksist teorinin olup olmadığını incelemektedir.
