Osmanlı’da on dokuzuncu yüzyılın ikinci yarısından sonra hızlanan modernleşme çabalarının eğitim alanındaki önemli ve tarihsel bir örneği Darüşşafaka okulunun kurulmasıdır. Darüşşafaka, dönemin yüksek bürokratlarınca kurulan Cemiyet-i Tedrisiye-i İslamiye adlı bir toplulukça özel statüde açılmış bir okulken II. Abdülhamid döneminde hamisi olan topluluğun dağıtılmasıyla dönemin eğitim bakanlığına devredilmiştir. II. Meşrutiyet’in ilanıyla birlikte okul mezunları adı geçen topluluğu yeniden canlandırıp okullarını eğitim bakanlığından geri almışlardır. Bu makalede Haziran 1909-Mayıs 1910 tarihleri arasında on iki sayı yayınlanmış Darüşşafaka adlı Osmanlıca derginin özellikle birinci sayısında bizzat topluluk üyelerince anlatılan bu süreç ortaya konulup günümüze gelindiğinde topluluğun hedeflerinin ne kadarının gerçekleştiğini değerlendirilmektedir.
